The number of unfilled job positions in Spain is growing, now’s your chance to find a job

The situation in Spain, where there are job positions that remain unfilled, is often described using a common saying: “how can there be unemployment if positions remain unfilled?”.

Essentially this means that the skills and knowledge that businesses want their candidates to have, do not match those of the unemployed.

Therefore companies need to be more open to having less skilled employees and take the time to train them. What does this mean for you?

It might seem contradictory but actually you’re in luck. Here’s why:

1. New law reforms

In order to bring more workers into the labor force, the Spanish government passed a bill in July 2022 reforming the immigration law. This will make it easier for foreigners to get work permits.

With these reforms, foreign nationals who have lived in Spain for at least two years will be able to enroll in training courses for highly-demanded jobs. This also allows them to apply for residence papers.

Also any international students studying in Spain will be able to start working when they graduate (before they would have to wait three years). Students will be able to work up to 30 hours per week while enrolled in university.

2. Companies need your talent

For you, as someone looking for work in Spain, this means that you can now take up training courses (if you’ve lived in the country for 2 years) for in-demand jobs but it also mean that companies will be more open to hiring a international worker with less experience but who speaks certain languages and has the right motivation.

If you speak a language that is hard for companies to find in candidates in Spain like German or Norwegian, for example, then they will be more likely to hire and train you to have the skills they’re in need of.

So don’t be afraid to apply for a job if you just graduated or feel like you don’t have enough experience!

3. Apply to what interests you, but be realistic

The job search can be a long process which may lead you to just apply for any job. This can be a big mistake. Stick to what you actually would enjoy and be open-minded, but also remember what your own skill-set and experience is and what types of jobs you’re most equipped for.

If you apply for a job that asks for 10 years of experience when you only have two, it’s probably not the best option.

Applying for something that may be slightly different from what you’ve done in the past, however, it motivates you and if you have the right personal skills then many companies would be open to hiring and training you.

Remember you can also take up classes or online courses to learn new skills if you want to try a different career.

4. Prepare your CV

If you want to get hired, you have to make sure your resume is in top shape. This means having an easy to read design that will catch the eye of recruiters. A great CV will boost your chances of getting hired.

Tailor your CV to each job you apply for. Use keywords from the job description and include them in your skills, experience and job titles. These words are what recruiters look for and if they don’t find them quickly then they won’t bother looking through the rest of your information.

Try to keep your CV on one page and put what’s most relevant to the job that you desire. You don’t have to tell your whole life story, just stick to what will prove that you’re the best candidate for the job.

5. Use a recruitment agency

Looking for a job can be overwhelming so having a recruitment agency help you in the process can be quite effective.
