How to find out if a company is right for you in a post-pandemic world

After the Covid-19 pandemic, the work dynamic has changed. “The Great Resignation” has given candidates the power to demand better working conditions.

So in a post-pandemic work environment, it’s important to ask the hard questions and find out if the company will make sure you’re safe, if you’ll be offered job security, and if the job is the right fit for you.

Remember to investigate a bit. Check the company website, social media and online reviews as there you may find answers to some of your questions.

So what questions should you ask in a post-pandemic job interview?

Ask about the work model

Find out how the company works. Is it remote, hybrid, completely on-site or is there flexibility? Make sure the model is clear.

If it’s a remote job:

    • Ask what software or hardware will the company give you in order to work and stay connected to the rest of the team.

If the role is hybrid:

    • Ask what days you would have to be in the office or if you can decide.
    • Will going to the office be worthwhile? Will the commute have a purpose or will you just end up doing things in the office that could’ve been done at home?

Ask about the company culture

Does the company work to protect its employees and make sure they have proper working conditions? What is the company’s policy if someone has covid? Is there a vaccine mandate?

Find out if employees are valued and treated with respect. The culture should be empathetic and positive.

    • Does the staff get along and enjoy working with each other?
    • Are there team building activities to allow the team to disconnect and create stronger bonds?

The questions will allow you to see if your values align with the company’s and if you feel like you would make a good fit.

Ask about flexibility and work-life balance

It’s important to know how the employer will act if you’re feeling burnout, if you’re sick, or if something comes that prevents you from doing your job properly. How will they work to help you?

Are there mental health days? Some companies even take off two weeks in months such as August where business may be slower and allow employees to recharge.

Find out what policies the company implements to protect your well-being. Make sure that you can see yourself having a proper work-life balance where you won’t have to stress if you need your boss to be flexible.

Ask about the onboarding process

The way an organization brings new hires onboard can make or break employee retention. If done poorly, the employee will leave and the recruitment process was a waste of time and money. When done right, the new hire will feel included, safe to ask questions, motivated and will be more loyal to the company.

Ask if new employees will receive training or if someone will be there to help them adapt. Other questions about the onboarding process may include:

    • How will the company make them feel valued and like they’re an important part of the team?
    • What will the workload be like in the first month?
    • Will there be patience for a new hire to learn how things work and find their routine?

Ask about the company’s plans for the future

This is key to know what the company’s goals are and how that will include you. This can also help you know if your ideas will fit with what the company has planned.

    • Is the company looking to bring more people to your potential department?
    • Will the company change its work model?

These questions may be tough to ask but they are key to deciding if you really see yourself working for a certain company. The willingingness of the employer to be transparent will also make you feel more comfortable at the job.
